Before buying a used vehicle there are things you should check to make sure you don’t get caught out.
1. Get a pre purchase vehicle inspection through Kick The Tyres.
2. Check that the number plate is the right one registered to the vehicle through carjam.co.nz. It’s free to do! If the number plate comes up as being registered to a different vehicle, you should definitely investigate further to see if the vehicle is stolen.
3. Check that the vehicle does not have any finance owing on it. For under $15 you can do this also through carjam.co.nz. If the vehicle has finance owing on it then we highly recommend that you make an agreement with the seller that you will pay the finance company directly for the total amount owing and then any balance direct to the seller. This is your most foolproof way of ensuring that the finance is paid off and you are not at risk of having your vehicle repossessed later on if the seller does not pay the finance off themselves. NEVER agree to allowing the seller to continue paying off the finance after you have purchased the vehicle.
Avoid the risk of repossession!
